The importance of washing your face is not always that obvious when you are dead-tired. I know the feeling… You come home late, you’ve been running around all day and the first thing you want to do is collapse in to a heap of exhaustion and just go to sleep. Taking off your makeup is probably the last thing on your mind and you probably shrug off that voice inside your head nagging you to reach for the makeup wipes. We are all guilty of it but what might seem like no big deal really is and I’m here to tell you why.
First and foremost, sleeping in your makeup clogs your pores. Throughout the day makeup traps pollutants and other nasties on your skin and when you don’t wash your face this allows for dirt and bacteria to build up and enter the pores. Yuck! This can lead to enlarged pores, dehydrated skin and painful pimples. Not to mention the fact that any lotions or potions you put on top can’t work their magic.
If you want to get your glow on, not washing your face is not the way to go about it! One of the keys to glowing skin is exfoliation but when you have a layer of makeup caked on top of it this seriously impedes your skins ability to naturally exfoliate. On average we shed 50 million skin cells a day and if there is a layer of makeup sitting on our face our skin just isn’t able to shed those dead skin cells. The result? A noticeably grey, sallow, lackluster complexion.
If you’re still not sold on the importance of washing your face, then this next fact is sure to get you reaching for the face wash. Sleeping in your makeup not only clogs your pores but can also exacerbate inflammatory skin diseases such as rosacea and eczema and can even lead to nasty infections such as sties or conjunctivitis. In fact, your eyes are the perfect petri dish for nasty bacteria and dirt to build up and the longer eye makeup stays on your eyes the higher the risk of infection.
