The pH-level of your Skin is the most important indicator to find out if you have a healthy skin. The pH level of the skin refers to how acidic or alkaline it is. But what is pH and why is it so important?

pH stands for potential Hydrogen and is used to describe the acid-alkaline ratio of a substance, which ranges from 0 to 14, where 0 is the most acidic and 14 is the most alkaline. You can measure the pH-value of your skin with a pH strip. Basically you can measure anything as long as it contains water.

The Acid Mantle Protects Skin

The combination of sebum and sweat forms a film on top of the Stratum Corneum known as the acid mantle. It is both a physical and chemical barrier that provides a crucial form of protection, the skin’s first defence mechanism.
It has been known for about a hundred years that our skin is slightly acidic. Modern measurement methods provide an average pH of 5.5 (Not 7 what most people think!) This is due to natural body acids like for instance sweat.

The importance of acidic properties for our skin surface also appears from the term “protective acid mantle”. It has the task of avoiding harmful microorganisms (such as negative environmental effects) and protecting the skin against infection, irritation, allergies and dehydration. In addition, an intact acid coat also has a natural deodorant effect: the bacterial degradation of sweat components, which causes body odor, is kept low.

The pH of skincare products are extremely important

In a recent study done by 5 students of the Erasmus University (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), the students found out that almost 96% of the skincare product are NOT pH-balanced and almost 85% of these products affect the Acid Mantle on short and long term. And there you have it; Your skins pH is off balance and more vulnerable for skin infections like for instance break-outs.

Why don’t skincare companies make all their products pH balanced?

It’s not “sexy” to talk about the pH level of your skin and it isn’t a popular subject to talk about because it’s so boring. That’s why most skincare companies don’t educate you about this subject. Next up is exercise. Yes even if it is freezing outside its totally worth dragging your butt to the gym or on a brisk walk just to get a few minutes of moderate exercise. Now I’m not saying you have to go hard-core on your workouts but just enough to raise your heart rate and really get your blood pumping! When you workout you sweat allowing your body to release nasty toxins that could make you sick. Plus exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy heart and body weight. So dust off those running shoes and get to it!

Now this next one might sound a little odd but trust me it REALLY works and only takes a few seconds. At the end of you’re shower flick the temperature down a few degrees for 10 seconds before turning it back to hot. Repeat this two or three times for an immune system boost. The temperature fluctuation works by shocking your body in to action and the change from hot to cold creates steam which is great for clearing blocked nasal passages and relieving sinus pain.

Finally pop some magnesium supplements! Magnesium is my absolute favourite supplement for a whole host of ailments. If my skin is playing up I reach for magnesium. Achy tummy, gotta have some magnesium! Even if I’m just feeling a little off magnesium helps me to feel more balanced. Broken Capillaries, also known as spider veins are very hard to treat. Medically speaking there are no known methods to shrink capillaries, but there are ways to make them disappear and to prevent them.

How to prevent Broken Capillaries?

  • The most common cause of Broken Capillaries is sun exposure. Always use sunblock, protecting your skin is very important.
  • Vigorous scrubbing of the skin can aggravate already sensitive areas. Be gentle with your skin and use a pH-Neutral Soap.
  • Don’t drink alcohol. It “feeds” the Capillaries with poison.

What makes Broken Capillaries worse?

  • Don’t go to the sauna and watch out with hot baths if you suffer from Broken Capillaries. Changes in temperature can aggravate broken capillaries.
  • Strenuous exercise. Blood vessels break in the skin when the pressure around the area is increased, as during a heavy weight-lifting session.
  • High stress can dilate blood vessels and result in broken capillaries.

How to make Broken Capillaries disappear? 

  • Upgrade your natural vitamin intake with drinking 2 glasses of fresh orange juice a day.
  • Try using natural vitamin-e oil (watch out 90% isn’t natural). You can purchase it anywhere for 4 or 5 dollars max. Take 2 drups and gently rub the area 3 times a day with your finger tips. Make sure washing your hands before doing! This takes a couple of months before you see any results.
  • Mineral salt baths can stop itchiness and itching the area makes it worse.

Last but not least
