The pH-level of your Skin

The pH-level of your Skin is the most important indicator to find out if you have a healthy skin. The pH level of the skin refers to how acidic or alkaline it is. But what is pH and why is it so important?

pH stands for potential Hydrogen and is used to describe the acid-alkaline ratio of a substance, which ranges from 0 to 14, where 0 is the most acidic and 14 is the most alkaline. You can measure the pH-value of your skin with a pH strip. Basically you can measure anything as long as it contains water.

The Acid Mantle Protects Skin

The combination of sebum and sweat forms a film on top of the Stratum Corneum known as the acid mantle. It is both a physical and chemical barrier that provides a crucial form of protection, the skin’s first defence mechanism.
It has been known for about a hundred years that our skin is slightly acidic. Modern measurement methods provide an average pH of 5.5 (Not 7 what most people think!) This is due to natural body acids like for instance sweat.

The importance of acidic properties for our skin surface also appears from the term “protective acid mantle”. It has the task of avoiding harmful microorganisms (such as negative environmental effects) and protecting the skin against infection, irritation, allergies and dehydration. In addition, an intact acid coat also has a natural deodorant effect: the bacterial degradation of sweat components, which causes body odor, is kept low.

The pH of skincare products are extremely important

In a recent study done by 5 students of the Erasmus University (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), the students found out that almost 96% of the skincare product are NOT pH-balanced and almost 85% of these products affect the Acid Mantle on short and long term. And there you have it; Your skins pH is off balance and more vulnerable for skin infections like for instance break-outs.

Why don’t skincare companies make all their products pH balanced?

It’s not “sexy” to talk about the pH level of your skin and it isn’t a popular subject to talk about because it’s so boring. That’s why most skincare companies don’t educate you about this subject. It even goes beyond “sexyness”. We were advised by our IT-department to don’t talk about pH, because it is a super unpopular “search-word” in Google for instance. So it’s not like skincare companies don’t care about your skin. NO! It’s you; if you don’t care, they don’t care. It’s very simple, a skincare company, like every other company makes a product that is in demand. And fact of the matter is, pH-balanced skincare products are low in demand at the moment in Europe, China and United States. MUDMASKY® (a Dutch company with a stubborn CEO) introduced the world’s first pH-balanced Face Mask back in 2015 which has become the most popular and sold Face Mask in Singapore (in just 1 year) and the Best Rated Face Mask in the United States.

3 Tips for your clearest skin ever

Clear radiant skin is something that everyone desires; however it isn’t always that easy to achieve. Below are three top 3 tips to help kick your skin in to gear and getting it on its way to being the clearest and most radiant it can be!

  1. Invest in an acid exfoliant. Now I don’t mean the sort of acid that’s going to burn your face off, I’m talking about acids such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acids that are all proven to be effective exfoliators. As scary as putting acid on your face might sound its probably one of the best things you can do to improve skin tone, texture and help keep pores clear of dirt and oil. It helps to speed up skin cell turnover, which means that new, plump, youthful looking skin cells are brought to the surface more quickly. It also means that your pores are getting a good ol’ clean out of any nasty’s that might be lurking. Bye bye blackheads!
  2. Do a facemask at least once a week. Facemasks are brilliant for keeping skin clear and fresh because they contain more potent, active ingredients than your traditional cleansers or moisturisers. These active ingredients are what help to brighten your skin, hydrate dry patches and soothe blemishes. Mudmasky Detox Purifying Recovery Mask is just perfect for this! Masks are brilliant because they really give your skin a kick and allow you some much needed chill time!
  3. Wear SPF everyday. The number one secret for clear, youthful looking skin is to wear an SPF every single day and this is even more important if you suffer with blemishes or pigmentation. Exposing any new acne scars or hyperpigmentation to direct sunlight without an SPF will result in them becoming darker and more pigmented. It also means that they will take longer to fade and be more difficult to treat. If you’re worried about SPF breaking you out or making your skin oily then don’t worry. There are plenty of acne friendly SPF’s out there that will protect your skin without breaking it out!

So there you have it 3 top tips to help you achieve your clearest skin ever!

I love a facial as much as the next skincare fanatic but what I don’t love is how expensive they can be. I don’t know about you but I don’t always have the money to splash out on a fancy facial. My solution? Why not bring the spa to me!

In our hectic lives it is so important that we remember to take the time for ourselves to relax, unwind and generally look after our bodies and minds. But why not our skin? Sometimes in the hectic everyday we can neglect our skin and this can lead to it looking a little dull, lifeless and congested. As much as our body and mind can use some TLC so can our skin.

My favourite way to bring the spa to my home is by setting the mood. I love to light candles, play some relaxing ambient music and run myself a hot bath. If you’re in to bath bombs why not throw one of those in to the mix as well. Whilst your bath is running you can start with the first steps of the at home facial.

First cleanse your skin with your favourite cleanser to remove any traces of makeup, dirt and pollution that have built up on your skin throughout the day. Now is the time to relax in your bath taking the time to be still and enjoy the warmth of the water and the calm atmosphere.

Once you get out of the bath its the perfect time to apply your Mudmasky Facial Detox Mask. Thanks to the steam and warmth your skin will be primed to receive the amazing benefits of this detoxifying facemask. Apply a thin layer all over the face making sure to avoid the delicate eye area. Leave on for 7 minutes for dry skin, 9 minutes for normal skin and 11 minutes for oily skin. The combination of French green clay, Wyoming clay and Moroccan Lava clay work in synergy to detoxify the pores, calm inflammation and gently exfoliate revealing a clearer, brighter more even-toned complexion. Honestly this stuff is a miracle worker!

Wait for ten minutes before continuing with your normal skincare products of serum, treatment product (vitamin c or retinol) and your favourite moisturizer or facial oil. Voilà! Your skin will look flawless, poreless and positively radiant.

I love the winter, but as the seasons begin to change you may start to notice that your skin might feel a little different. As soon as I feel that first chill in the air my skin feels less oily and can start to look a little dehydrated. Since its commonplace to switch up our wardrobe when the weather begins to turn isn’t it worth switching up our skincare too?

1. Switch up your skincare routine in the winter

One of the easiest things to switch up in your skincare routine in the winter is your moisturiser. I tend to favour the light, oil free kind in the summer but as soon as autumn rolls around I like to give my skin a little bit of extra TLC and that usually comes in the form of a face oil. If you are oily and acne-prone using an oil on your face my seem somewhat counter-intuitive but fear not some oils such as jojoba and rose oil work wonders at calming blemishes and can actually make your skin less oily! Oils are also great at preventing water-loss from the skin meaning it stays looking plump and glowing even when that winter chill kicks in.

2. Use a humidifier, say what!?

Now I know this next tip may seem a bit out of the ordinary but trust me it works! When you’re constantly going in and out from cold to hot it wreaks havoc on your skin. Think breakouts, sensitivity and red, inflamed skin. Not ideal. So to give skin some much needed relief I love using a humidifier. What a humidifier does is add moisture to the air helping to prevent dryness and irritation. Humidifiers are particularly effective for treating dry skin, soothing rosacea and also help to ward off common cold and flu symptoms. After sleeping with one for a couple of nights I notice a significant improvement in my skin and a noticeable bounciness. With one of these babies you can keep that J-Lo glow going year round.

3. The magic, Hyaluronic Acid

One of my favourite ingredients for ensuring my skin stays looking in tip top condition year round is Hyaluronic acid. The reason why I love it particularly in the winter is because it has the ability to hold up to ten times its weight in water. That means it is great at retaining water in the skin cells and stops water loss from the skin throughout the day. The result? Dewy, plump, youthful looking skin. Hyaluronic acid is especially brilliant for those of you who suffer with dehydrated skin or are starting to notice any fine lines as it helps to plump and smooth. My favourite way and one of the most efficient ways to incorporate Hyaluronic acid in to your routine is by using a hydrating serum.

4. The final touch

If you want to add a little extra oomph to your skin why not fake it till you make it by adding a light reflecting lotion or primer either on its own or before applying makeup. This is a quick fix to really amp up your skins luminosity and helps you to look extra glowy and healthy in the sometimes-gloomy weather!

5. How to use your Facial Mud Mask in the winter

In the winter you have to be extra careful using your Facial Mud Mask, since your skin feels dryer than normal.
If you want to use a Facial Mud Mask in the winter, always wait at least 1 hour after you arrived home. Also wait at least 1 hour after applying before leaving home. Don’t forget to read the directions: https://mudmasky.com/shop/detox-mask/
