Our new enemy, High Energy Visible (HEV) Light.

High Energy Visible Light (HEV Light) – also known as Blue Light – is less known, than for instance, UV-light. HEV light is also coming from the sun, but it’s also emitted by your smartphone, tablet, television, and computer screen.

What is Blue Light or High Energy Visible (HEV) Light?

To understand what Blue Light or HEV light exactly is we will start by explaining what the wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum are.

Blue Light is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is not very well known as for instance UV-rays or X-Rays.

The full electromagnetic spectrum looks like this:

1) Gamma rays – Gamma rays are used in medicine and/ or radiotherapy, for sterilization and disinfection and in the nuclear industry.

2) X-rays – Ever broke something in your body?

3) Ultraviolet (UV) rays – Most famous UV-rays are from the Sun

4) Visible light – Any light which is visible, from Laser till TV-light, Blue Light (or High Energy Visible Light)

5) Infrared light – Think of an infrared sauna for relaxations of muscles.

6) Radio waves – Ever listened to the radio?

Blue Light is made up of electromagnetic particles that travel in waves. These waves emit energy and range in length and strength. The shorter the wavelength; the higher the energy. The length of the waves is measured in nanometers (nm), with 1 nanometer equaling 1 billionth of a meter. Every wavelength is represented by a different color, and is grouped into the following categories:

Visible light is that part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is seen as colors: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. Blue light has a very short wavelength, and so produces a higher amount of energy. That’s why a part of Blue Light is named High Energy Visible Light better known as HEV-Light.

Does HEV Light cause skin damage?

There is a lot of research still to be done, so let’s ONLY sum up the facts: HEV light reaches the hypodermis and makes it potentially more damaging to the skin than ultraviolet rays! HEV light exposure can lead to dry and sensitive skin, which speeds up the process of skin aging.

So, the fact is that HEV light penetrates deeper into the skin. But we have to be very careful with false claims. It does NOT mean that because HEV light penetrates deeper into the skin, it’s more dangerous!

Difference between HEV light and Infrared light.

If you look at infrared light, it penetrates even deeper into the skin and reaches the joints, BUT it’s not proven infrared is bad for the skin if you are exposed less than 1 hour a day. However, with HEV light we are sometimes exposed up to 10 hours a day. Big difference!

Difference HEV light from digital devices and UV light from the sun.

Most people are all aware of the dangers of ultraviolet rays from the sun. For example, UVA rays cause aging, and UVB contribute to burning. This ranges from 100 to 400 nanometers. HEV light penetrates from 380 to 500 nanometers. To be exact; Blue/violet HEV light ranges from 380 to 450 nanometers and blue/turquoise HEV light ranging from 450 to 500 nanometers.

Recent research has indicated that HEV light generates similar amounts of reactive oxygen species, as UVA and UVB rays combined.

Dedicated research and science about HEV light started since 2006. Compare this to research on UV-light. UV-light is discovered 220 years ago. Just 40 years ago researchers have discovered that UV-light from the sun is causing skin aging.

Keep distance!

Since 2018 we have worked with different R&D laboratories around the world to come with a formula to block HEV Light. At this moment it’s impossible to fully block HEV Light. However, we did find a rather easy formula that blocks HEV Light up to 94% from digital devices like a smartphone and laptop. The more distance you keep from your digital device, the better it works. We would advise keeping at least 23 inches / 60 cm distance from your digital devices.
